Queer Expo 2018
The end of June saw Queer Expo 2 taking place. I got to attend with Afflatus Magazine to take photos, it was amazing seeing all the creative drag artists.

Faerie Rade 2018
Yesterday I attended the Faerie Rade.
It's been awhile since I've been to one, but seeing everyone's costumes and creativity has really inspiring. I'm taking a bit of a step back from taking photos at events, preferring to get photos of friends, or mini shoots this year.
So I photographed Eloquent Mx Loki, and Sasha von Plundercat at the rade.

Latex Love Life Drawing
On Friday I attended Latex Love Life Drawing, hosted by Covert Characters Life Drawing, taking photographs of the night.
I love latex, so it was not only great being able to photograph more of it, but seeing how people interpreted the material into the art styles.
It was a great night, with really friendly people. I definitely recommend going along to one of Covert Characters if you're looking to do some interesting life drawing.

Queer Expo
July the 15th and 16th, saw the
premiere of Queer Expo; an LGBT+ convention, which myself and Mx Loki attended
as media for Afflatus Magazine.
Mx Loki will be writing out a full feature for our next issue, but for those who wish to know what the event was like, but can’t wait until February; continue reading.
Overall, this event was small. This is to be expected of a first-run event; you need to build a reputation in order to gain brand loyalty, but this smallness could be mistaken as lack of interest.
I believe there were three main reasons as to the small turn out; lack of advertising, confusion as to what the event was, and high ticket prices.

Overall, this event was small. This is to be expected of a first-run event; you need to build a reputation in order to gain brand loyalty, but this smallness could be mistaken as lack of interest.

Many people commented on the lack of advertising and
promotion of the event, several people mentioned to us that they had asked if
their queer friends were attending, only to learn those friends had no idea
there was a con. Beyond facebook, there didn’t seem to be much reach out.
The event itself also did not seem to know what it was leading up to it. Beginning as a Drag convention, it changed to a queer expo, then added pop culture to it. This adding of pop culture was not relevant, as everyone there was there for drag and sexuality/gender, most of the pop culture stalls were un-visited.
Finally the ticket prices. I am torn over the costs of the tickets, because if you attended and saw many of the drag performances and panels, it was worth your money. But I understand that $80 for the weekend at the con’s first running would have turned people away, as that is a lot of money.
So the turnout was small, but that also worked in people’s advantages as it really allowed them to be able to talk and interact with the special guests. We got to speak to most of the American Queens; Shangela has an amazing warmth to her interactions and a killer memory, Latrice Royale is so genuine and can see that in people as well, and The Boulet Brothers are stunning. It also meant we were able to speak to attendees more freely; people felt more comfortable in the open space as opposed to being crushed in the crowds of the big cons. And this freedom in space also gave itself to attendees showing off their big, elaborate, and gorgeous outfits.

We also attended many panels and performances (something
we don’t usually get to do at bigger cons). I really loved the performances, it
let me see a lot more of Australian drag talent than I would usually be able to
see, as well as the international queens whom might come down once every couple
years and I’ll miss them. Aysha Buffet feels her performances so deeply you can
see it in her body, whilst I love BeBe Gunn’s presence and facial expression,
and the Space Queens show by Art Simone and Philmah Bocks appealed greatly to the Star Wars geek in me .
The panels we attended were entertaining or informative, and made you contemplate the roles and representation of LGBT+ culture. I also have to applaud those who went up on stage; it’s hard to be in front of a large crowd, but it’s harder in front of a small crowd, and everyone was professional and still gave their all.
One thing that was frustrating was the two stages were inside. This meant often the music/mics would be turned up and began to drown out conversations in the traders’ area. It became difficult to talk to people outside the stage areas, and was overwhelming inside.
Overall, I did enjoy Queer Expo. It is a first time con that definitely needs its kinks smoothed out, but it has so much potential behind it. It was small, but so was RuPaul’s drag con its first year, and this smallness help build connections and networks between people. It also showcased such amazing drag performers, and gave voice to LGBT+ issues. I hope to see it refine its goals and organization, so that it grows into massive convention it can be.

Oz Comic Con 2017
Oz Comic Con was this past weekend. It was my second time attending, and once again was helping at the Tentacle Spine table, and only went with my camera on the Sunday.
I didn't get to see much of the convention, it was so packed on the Saturday that I was just going between the table and getting air in the hall. Sunday I got to glance around a bit more, but mostly stuck to the artist alley and checked out some new artists that I loved including The Cuteness Bakery, and Colour to the Bone.
I managed to take a couple of con-floor photos on Sunday, it was really enjoyable to see so many people having fun with their costumes, especially those in groups of friends. I did do some small shoots, but they won't be posted for a little while.

Lady Gaga: Kirie Cosplay
I loved this cosplay! I stayed up until 3 in the morning to purchase Gaga's Monster High doll, so it was fantastic to see her in the flesh. She also had a great idea for the bubblegum.

M.A.D Fashion Showcase 2017
The 25th of March saw the second M.A.D
(Melbourne Alternative Designers) Fashion Showcase and once again I was invited
along as media. Born from Lyris Deign and Clockwork Butterfly, this event aims
to display the alternative community to the alternative community, promoting
Australian designers and artists.
Last year’s show was an immense success, with only a few
issues, for example too loud music during intermission. This year’s show
clearly took all feedback on board and made improvements; the music was a lot
quieter and made communicating with stall holders easier. This year they
introduced a ‘No Flash Photography’ rule, which I found to be a good step in
improvement. From my perspective it meant I did not have to worry about
batteries and flash syncing, for the models it meant not being blinded on the
catwalk, and for the audience it meant not having flashes interrupting their
experience.
Once again, the show was well organized and run. With
doors opening as scheduled, and the shows and intermissions running on time.
The market was set up which allowed ease to walk down the aisles and chat with
stall holders. This year hosted many more stalls, and I hope they do not
overbook in the future as it will make moving hard. Intermission also featured
low-light which made looking at wares difficult, but the lights were turned
higher after the show.

The Melbourne Gothic and Victorian Picnic - 2016
Last month saw The Melbourne Gothic & Victorian Picnic return for it's bi-annual event.
I had not attended one of the picnics for a couple years, and was so happy to see how much it had grown. It was a fantastic day, and even though the sun was out the park was black!
My apologies for taking so long to release these photos, a couple were used for one of my university assignments, so they all had to be withheld.

AMC Expo 2016
This past weekend saw the second year of AMC Expo, and to be honest I will be surprised if there is a third.
It is a dead con. Since splitting ties with Armageddon Expo, AMC has been struggling. With smaller attendance and higher prices, many artists and traders did not attend, and it showed. The attendance this year was even smaller, making the showgrounds seem like a ghost town compared to the usual sardine-packed experience. Whilst this was nice as an attendee, as it allowed for a more relaxed time and you could actually look at stalls, it was clear that the stall holders were suffering; several packed up and left early during the weekend.
I think in a year saturated with Melbourne cons, and being only a few weeks before PAX, AMC hasn't had a chance to return to its former Armageddon and I don't think it will.

AvCon 2016
A couple of weeks ago I traveled up to Adelaide to help out Tentacle Spine with their stall at AvCon.
It was my first time in Adelaide, and thus my first time at AvCon. I had a fun time working at the stall, being surrounded by those awesome horns for the weekend was awesome. But due to this I didn't get to look around the con so I can't do a review as I usually have for conventions, or take many photos.
But I did take some photos (even despite my camera deciding to die on me), and had a great time seeing Adelaide's cosplay community.

Oz Comic Con 2016
Last weekend as Melbourne's Oz Comic Con! It was my first Comic Con ever and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
Over the years I have heard how terribly run the Comic Cons have been, with last year people finally pointing out some improvements. I didn't get to see much of the convention, as I was helping out at Tentacle Spine's stall, but when I did get a chance to wander it was well set out, with the space clearly being divided into Artist ally, bigger stores, and then signing area. A nice touch was that the entry lead straight into the artist ally; promoting local artists over the stores.
An annoyance was that the convention was right down at door 10 in the exhibition center, but with at least 2 other conventions on at the same time someone had to be in the back. Though to try to help make it easier OzCC divided the hallway into two so that those who still needed tickets took up one side whilst those who already had tickets could come and go. Whilst this attempt was appreciated, they divided it so those waiting were on the right hand side, meaning when people left they had to cut across the queue coming in. Australians naturally go to the left so this was disruptive. And it wasn't until Sunday afternoon that they began to widen the 'already have passes' section, so the rest of the weekend that area was cramped as less people needed tickets.
It was so busy too. But not just the regular crowd, older generations and families were attending, which was really great to see. This convention gives me the feeling that if it was run really well Australia could start having a convention the size of America's Comic Cons. They used Pax's tape on the floor of for queues (I am so thankful for this trend), the panels areas (whilst I didn't get to see any) were obvious and stood out, usually they are just little boxed in spaces that I don't realize are for panels until the end of the weekend. The cosplay area was a nice spot, and the addition of back drops let people have better shots without the crowds in the background. And the artist tables had a lot of space behind them, which for Tentacle spine with five people, and one getting into Immortan Joe, was amazing.
Overall I did enjoy this convention. I didn't get to see much of it, so I don't know if that would have changed my mind, but from what I saw it was pretty well run and organized, and I think it will be a convention that I start attending now.

M.A.D Fashion Showcase 2016

Supanova 2016
This past weekend saw the start of Victoria's convention season with Supanova!
This year I opened up bookings for 30 minute shoots for the first time. I really enjoyed this set up; it allowed me to photograph some awesome cosplayers more creatively and thoroughly than just con floor photos. It also let these cosplayers get great photos of their cosplays; I know how much effort people put into their cosplays for a con, but they're not always able to do photoshoots outside of events.
Because of these shoots, I didn't get much time to take in much of the convention, but I still had a good time. Supanova once again blocked off a section of the show grounds. This is a feature that I do like; it means you can go into the buildings a lot quicker and easier as the process isn't slowed down by getting out our wristband and making sure the person can see it. They also separated the celebrity photos/signings from exhibitor's hall, which last year made exhibitor's nervous but I think greatly helped with crowds this year. Saturday was packed, the busiest I have ever seen it and if you had the celebrity lines in the exhibitor's hall it would have been chaotic. The crowd grew worse with the weather, when rain began people would try to pack into the hall, leaving little space to move. In comparison Sunday was extremely quiet, you could move around the exhibitor's hall comfortably all day. I'm not sure why this was the case, but it was interesting.

AMC Expo 2015
This past weekend saw the debut of AMC Expo, formerly Armageddon but no longer affiliated. Being the first running since splitting from Armageddon, AMC had a lot to prove; and sadly it fell a bit flat.
A lot of conventions this year stepped up their game with organization since PAX came along, especially regarding lines. It's natural now to compare Supanova to AMC, seeing as they're similar conventions and are now both at the Showgrounds. This year Supanova changed so you needed a pass to access their area of the showgrounds, and had a lot of signage to let people know which lines they were meant to be in. This was especially helpful for those coming in via the train. AMC however, stuck to the usual setup of having people line up at the exhibitor's hall entrance, with minimal; and misleading signage. Having bought my ticket from Ticketek, I lined up in the line marked 'Ticketek', only to reach the front and find out those particular scanners didn't work when scanning mobile devices and that I needed to line up at the VIP section (though that scanner didn't work either and my code had to be put in manually). A similar occurrence happened on the Sunday, this time they made it clear where people with tickets on mobile devices needed to line up (not with signage, but with volunteers), but the scanner wasn't working, and I saw several people with mobiles be scanned through the paper ticket line. There was also a VIP entrance, with red carpet, but this entrance was pretty useless as regular ticket holders, with their passes, could cut the line to walk straight in.
The exhibitor's hall setup followed their usual formula, though the aisles seemed a bit wider this year which is always appreciated. However, they split up the artist's alley in a very odd way. Their were two major splits with each side of the hall having some artist alley, and then a second split on the right wall. Further artist's were sprinkled throughout the space but weren't receiving much attention due to their location.
Another noticeable difference between Armageddon and AMC was the lack of attendees. Perhaps because they haven't been clear that they are formerly Armageddon, or maybe it's because PAX is only two weeks away, but their was significantly less people at this convention than I've seen before. I could walk around the halls reasonably comfortably on both days, even during the peak hours in the morning and lunch time. Their was also very few people during the last hour of Sunday. Usually there will be people trying to get in last purchases, and cosplayers saying goodbye outside; but there was almost no one.
Sadly, I wasn't able to check out much of the other activities during the weekend, so I can't comment on how they were run. But overall, whilst I enjoyed myself, it was mostly due to friends and not the convention itself. AMC was a good convention, but compared to others it just didn't reach the mark. I think they really need to fight to compete with PAX, especially since they're so close together, and they need to work out tweaks with organization to allow attendees to enjoy themselves from the moment they enter the showgrounds.

A lot of conventions this year stepped up their game with organization since PAX came along, especially regarding lines. A similar occurrence happened on the Sunday, this time they made it clear where people with tickets on mobile devices needed to line up (not with signage, but with volunteers), but the scanner wasn't working, and I saw several people with mobiles be scanned through the paper ticket line. There was also a VIP entrance, with red carpet, but this entrance was pretty useless as regular ticket holders, with their passes, could cut the line to walk straight in.
The exhibitor's hall setup followed their usual formula, though the aisles seemed a bit wider this year which is always appreciated. However, they split up the artist's alley in a very odd way. Their were two major splits with each side of the hall having some artist alley, and then a second split on the right wall. Further artist's were sprinkled throughout the space but weren't receiving much attention due to their location.
Another noticeable difference between Armageddon and AMC was the lack of attendees. Perhaps because they haven't been clear that they are formerly Armageddon, or maybe it's because PAX is only two weeks away, but their was significantly less people at this convention than I've seen before. I could walk around the halls reasonably comfortably on both days, even during the peak hours in the morning and lunch time. Their was also very few people during the last hour of Sunday. Usually there will be people trying to get in last purchases, and cosplayers saying goodbye outside; but there was almost no one.
Sadly, I wasn't able to check out much of the other activities during the weekend, so I can't comment on how they were run. But overall, whilst I enjoyed myself, it was mostly due to friends and not the convention itself. AMC was a good convention, but compared to others it just didn't reach the mark. I think they really need to fight to compete with PAX, especially since they're so close together, and they need to work out tweaks with organization to allow attendees to enjoy themselves from the moment they enter the showgrounds.

Supanova 2015
The con season is now underway, opening last weekend with Supanova! And it was the biggest one I've ever seen.
Saturday was packed, you could barely move inside, and outside was no different. I think this sudden increase of attendees would have been due to the big name guests like Christopher Lloyd and George Takei. But Supanova had rearranged their usual set up, which helped ease the crowds.
I know a lot of table and stall holders were disappointed to learn that the celebrity signings had been moved to a separate building, as a lot of sales come from people who only come for signings but check out the stalls on the way out. But in my opinion, Supanova made the right choice in separating the celebrities from the exhibitor's hall. The exhibitor's hall, as I said before, was packed full, I can't imagine how worse it would have been with people waiting in line for signings as well.
Supanova also seems to want to grow more, with Popcultcha and EB Games having massive stall space. What this means for the artist alley, I'm not sure, but I hope they don't begin ignoring the smaller artists, because they're a core part of the con and the community.
The convention also changed up access to it. Instead of being able to hang around outside without a pass, you needed a pass to get into Supanova's area of the showgrounds. Not only did this stop people loitering without passes, but it also made it easier to enter halls as you didn't have volunteers constantly asking to see your pass.
The second day was a lot quieter. I could actually browse the stalls without being pushed along by the crowd, it wasn't unbearably hot inside and out, and I got to see some of the celebrities walking around. My only complaint about the second day was they attempted to make and entrance only, and ext only door to the exhibitor hall. I wouldn't have a problem usually, but they started doing it halfway through the day. Though they gave up quickly.
My other complaint would have to be ticket prices. I know they've upped the prices because it's technically a three-day pass, but hardly anyone goes on Friday. Nothing is set up, the only thing on Friday is buying tokens for signings. I think they need to make the weekend pass a two-day pass, and then add an extra pass for the Friday for people who want to go.
Anyway, enough of what I thought of the convention, you're here for photos!

The Royal Geelong Show
Yesterday I attended the Royal Geelong Show, along with Eloquent Mx Loki, Miss Cee, and Lisa of Owl Nest Crafts.
I hadn't been to the show in years, and the others, having lived in Melbourne their lives, hadn't attended the Geelong Show before. We went primarily to check out the results of the competitions Lisa and I had entered. I placed 2nd in the 'Changing faces of Australian Human Form' with my photo "Fair Ladies en Promenade". Whilst Lisa won/placed with four out her five entries!
It was a fun day out though. We petted a lot of animals in the petting zoo, and the baby goats tried to eat Mx Loki and Miss Cee's hair and jackets. I watched the horse events, Miss Cee won a huge stuffed toy, and we went on a couple of rides. We also watched the racing pigs (which was what I really wanted to see), and they were adorable! None of my pigs won, but seeing the diving pigs afterwards made me forget quickly. Mx Loki and I also visited the Blacksmith there, and watched him make a lead rope and horseshoe in front of us, it was interesting to see.
It was a quiet day because it was Thursday, which, while it gives the show a different feel, is actually better because you can walk with space around you and often get bonus items from the prize games or from stalls because you talk to the workers more.
I would like to see the fireworks this year, but I will be at Armageddon this weekend!
