If I Had A Heart

I'm excited to share my project for my Graphics Design class at the Academy of Design Australia. The aim of this project was to create a Record Cover; along with a CD cover/booklet, poster, and t-shirt.
I chose Fever Ray's If I Had A Heart, I really love her music, and her lyrics are so quirky. I combined this with my current trend of Runes, by using Mannaz, meaning mankind.

Uta

The other night I played around with lighting and photographed Mx Loki's Uta 'Statue Legends' figure. I enjoy still lifes because it allows me to practice lighting and I can use small desk lamps and get really cool results.

Ragnarök

I'm excited to share my big project for my photography class at the Academy of Design Australia. The aim of this project was to create a portfolio, consisting of ten images, featuring tableau vivant portraiture, and still life photography.
It's currently the biggest project I've done to date, it involved five separate shoots; some on location, some in a set I made, costuming, prosthetics and special effects. But I really enjoyed creating this, and I can't thank those who were involved enough.

Personal Space

I created this piece for the Academy of Design Australia SPACE: first and second year exhibition 2015. I'm really happy with this piece, and you can still see it on display at the moment.

Personal space is important to me. But quite often people around me breach my personal space, either intentionally or through a lack of understanding. In this photo I captured how I feel when these breaches occur. I used a lot of negative space in my piece to represent how, in order to gain one’s own personal space back from those around them, they must shrink themselves. But this is an unhealthy circle, as those encroaching continue to close in and the individual shrinks further and further.

Komorebi

I shot this for a competition, but sadly didn't win. The theme was "into the sun" but I always like to try to create more interest in my photos than what's expected, so I didn't do a landscape photo during the golden hour, like everyone else.

AMC Expo 2015

This past weekend saw the debut of AMC Expo, formerly Armageddon but no longer affiliated. Being the first running since splitting from Armageddon, AMC had a lot to prove; and sadly it fell a bit flat.
A lot of conventions this year stepped up their game with organization since PAX came along, especially regarding lines. It's natural now to compare Supanova to AMC, seeing as they're similar conventions and are now both at the Showgrounds. This year Supanova changed so you needed a pass to access their area of the showgrounds, and had a lot of signage to let people know which lines they were meant to be in. This was especially helpful for those coming in via the train. AMC however, stuck to the usual setup of having people line up at the exhibitor's hall entrance, with minimal; and misleading signage. Having bought my ticket from Ticketek, I lined up in the line marked 'Ticketek', only to reach the front and find out those particular scanners didn't work when scanning mobile devices and that I needed to line up at the VIP section (though that scanner didn't work either and my code had to be put in manually). A similar occurrence happened on the Sunday, this time they made it clear where people with tickets on mobile devices needed to line up (not with signage, but with volunteers), but the scanner wasn't working, and I saw several people with mobiles be scanned through the paper ticket line. There was also a VIP entrance, with red carpet, but this entrance was pretty useless as regular ticket holders, with their passes, could cut the line to walk straight in.

The exhibitor's hall setup followed their usual formula, though the aisles seemed a bit wider this year which is always appreciated. However, they split up the artist's alley in a very odd way. Their were two major splits with each side of the hall having some artist alley, and then a second split on the right wall. Further artist's were sprinkled throughout the space but weren't receiving much attention due to their location.

Another noticeable difference between Armageddon and AMC was the lack of attendees. Perhaps because they haven't been clear that they are formerly Armageddon, or maybe it's because PAX is only two weeks away, but their was significantly less people at this convention than I've seen before. I could walk around the halls reasonably comfortably on both days, even during the peak hours in the morning and lunch time. Their was also very few people during the last hour of Sunday. Usually there will be people trying to get in last purchases, and cosplayers saying goodbye outside; but there was almost no one.

Sadly, I wasn't able to check out much of the other activities during the weekend, so I can't comment on how they were run. But overall, whilst I enjoyed myself, it was mostly due to friends and not the convention itself. AMC was a good convention, but compared to others it just didn't reach the mark. I think they really need to fight to compete with PAX, especially since they're so close together, and they need to work out tweaks with organization to allow attendees to enjoy themselves from the moment they enter the showgrounds.

Enough of the review, you're all here for cosplay photos! There were so many great costumes and characters. If you're interested in purchasing prints of you photos, you can find more information HERE.
Cosplayers, if you see yourself uncredited, please let me know so I can fix it.

Schediaphilia

Back in August I shot a series of photos for the Feck Erotic Art competition. Sadly, they weren't short listed, but I am still proud of them.

With these photos I wanted to show the representation of erotica in comics and drawings, and fetishization people create from these form of media. Attracted only to the genitals, and the sexual acts, the readers don't have genuine interest in the characters. And this creates a problem, where they have an idealized image of these sexual acts, and people, and then cannot handle when they have the opportunities for real sexual relationships, or have unhealthy warped views of how sexual relationships work.

Self Portrait Runes: Eihwaz

Three months since my last self portrait, and I have reached a new stage in my life. Kenaz helped me with inspiration and creativity for university. And while it will still help me, a new rune better represents where I am now; Eihwaz.
See all of the Self Portrait Runes Series

Eihwaz: Yew Tree

Phonetic equivalent: ei

Literal Meanings:
Yew

Divination Meanings:
Strength, Reliability, Trustworthiness, Enlightenment, Endurance, Protection.

Deities:
Yggdrasil

Analysis:
Eihwaz possesses the power of both death and regeneration. A re-growth from the passing of the old situation into the form of the new situation. It is a rune that acts as a magickal protector and facilitator. All rites of passage, particularly those marking the transition into adulthood, contain the symbolism of death, the idea being that one's former 'self' has died and given birth to a new persona. Because of its position as the 13th rune it is sometimes considered as the death rune. -Whispering Worlds
The driving force to acquire, providing motivation and a sense of purpose. Indicates that you have set your sights on a reasonable target and can achieve your goals. -Sunnyway

I chose Eihwaz because I feel that I am becoming who I want to be. I'm a lot more confident in myself, my work, and my body than I was when I started this project. I'm also happy to have said goodbye to my unemployed self, and to become a full-time student. While it may still be frustrating not working a full or part time job, it feels good to have a routine and to be productive again. Which is also why I also chose Eihwaz, university has given me a goal to reach for, and I am going quite well at it. I have big projects which I am in the middle of creating, and it's really great to do such big works. It has meant I'm not shooting as often as I used to, but what I am doing is awesome.

Vampirella

I'm excited to be able to finally show these photos! We shot these back in March, when I was in Mad Dame's studio, but have had to wait for them to be published first. A lot of people know Eloquent Mx Loki from when they were booth babe-ing as Vampirella. But I hadn't met them yet, so it was great to see them transform into Vampirella, who's a lot different from their usual cosplays.

Back in July Mad Dame did a Live Glitter Performance for RMIT's Founders' week.
I've seen Mad Dame glitter for shoots before, but it was really cool to see it behind glass, as a performance, and have the model approachable and interact with the crowd, rather than be a still image in a photo.

Self Portrait Runes: Kenaz

Two months after my first self portrait, Fehu has helped me with my life and moved on to make way for a new stage. With a new beginning comes a new Rune: Kenaz, and a new self portrait.
See all of the Self Portrait Runes Series

Kenaz: Torch

Phonetic equivalent: k/c

Literal Meanings:
Torch, Fire brand

Divination Meanings:
Knowledge, intellect, illumination, searching for enlightenment

Deities:
Odin, Heimdall

Analysis:
Kenaz is the rune of knowledge, teaching and learning. It sheds light on the path and dispels the dark shadows of ignorance. Today, light, inspiration and knowledge are often associated, as in 'gaining enlightenment'... To bring light is to make the invisible visible.
You are coming into a new understanding of life and its meaning. New insights await, but don't be complacent. Use this new understanding or it will be worthless... Enlightenment is replenishable. The more you use, the more knowledge you gain. Enlightenment itself is not the goal, it is just the starting point of a great adventure that will show you great wisdom and understanding if you proceed with truth and honesty. -Whispering Worlds

I chose Kenaz because the other week I had an epiphany. For a long time I have always had the mind set of "I want to do this one day, but I can't do it today." But my epiphany changed my mindset to "I want to do this one day, and even though I can't do it today, I can still makes plans and prepare today." I feel like my third eye has opened, that the darkness of the future is gone and I can see the steps I need to take to achieve my goals, and for the past couple of weeks I have been.
Running my own photography business has always been my dream, and for the past couple of weeks I've been taking the steps to make it a reality. It's going to start off slow, but I have my steps for the next five years to make it a sustainable income, so I can live doing what I love.
I've also chosen Kenaz because I'm going back to uni in July! I will be studying photography at the Academy of Design Australia for the next three years. I already create amazing photographs from being self taught, so imagine what I can do when I learn more technical aspects, I can bring so much more out of my work! Hopefully Kenaz will help me with my learning, and creativity during my course.

Brinicle

Now that the Melbourne BJD Emporium is over I can show this photo off!
Following the Winter theme, I went for a cold, icy look. All the lighting was done for the shot, no colours were altered in post-production. I made the snowflakes and icicles by hand for it, and had a whole awesome set up.
I won third place, by public vote. I'm really proud of this image.

Watercolours

Here it is! My big project I worked on back in March, shot for RAW Artist's Exposure in April.
I was inspired by colours and their psychological connection; what do the colours mean to people, what emotions do they evoke?
What do these photos mean to you? Feel free to let me know in the comments below :)

Supanova 2015

The con season is now underway, opening last weekend with Supanova! And it was the biggest one I've ever seen.
Saturday was packed, you could barely move inside, and outside was no different. I think this sudden increase of attendees would have been due to the big name guests like Christopher Lloyd and George Takei. But Supanova had rearranged their usual set up, which helped ease the crowds.
I know a lot of table and stall holders were disappointed to learn that the celebrity signings had been moved to a separate building, as a lot of sales come from people who only come for signings but check out the stalls on the way out. But in my opinion, Supanova made the right choice in separating the celebrities from the exhibitor's hall. The exhibitor's hall, as I said before, was packed full, I can't imagine how worse it would have been with people waiting in line for signings as well.
Supanova also seems to want to grow more, with Popcultcha and EB Games having massive stall space. What this means for the artist alley, I'm not sure, but I hope they don't begin ignoring the smaller artists, because they're a core part of the con and the community.
The convention also changed up access to it. Instead of being able to hang around outside without a pass, you needed a pass to get into Supanova's area of the showgrounds. Not only did this stop people loitering without passes, but it also made it easier to enter halls as you didn't have volunteers constantly asking to see your pass.

The second day was a lot quieter. I could actually browse the stalls without being pushed along by the crowd, it wasn't unbearably hot inside and out, and I got to see some of the celebrities walking around. My only complaint about the second day was they attempted to make and entrance only, and ext only door to the exhibitor hall. I wouldn't have a problem usually, but they started doing it halfway through the day. Though they gave up quickly.

My other complaint would have to be ticket prices. I know they've upped the prices because it's technically a three-day pass, but hardly anyone goes on Friday. Nothing is set up, the only thing on Friday is buying tokens for signings. I think they need to make the weekend pass a two-day pass, and then add an extra pass for the Friday for people who want to go.

Anyway, enough of what I thought of the convention, you're here for photos!

RAW Artist's: Exposure

After two months of planning, shooting, and all around stressing, the RAW: Exposure exhibition was on last Friday!

It was a great night filled with amazing art. I was really stoked to see the project, 'Watercolour', I had been working on for the past couple of months go from ideas, to sketchers, and then to finally come together and be hung up on the wall for everyone to see.
I didn't make as much money via prints and photoshoot vouchers as I would have liked, I think it's because people who bought money were after large art pieces to hang in their houses, but I received a lot of interest in my work, and a lot of business cards were taken. People really loved my Watercolour project that I had completed. One couple really understood my goal in a lot of my photos; that nudity isn't always sexual, and they had a long conversation with Eloquent Mx Loki about it.

As far as the behind the scenes of RAW goes, I have no complaints. I've seen a lot of people calling it a scam because you have to sell 20 tickets, or pay the equivalent price, but they tell you from the beginning that this is the case, and make sure you understand before booking you in. Communication between the organizers and myself was always fast and clear, emails with updates were often sent, and they were happy to answer any questions I had. It went very smoothly, especially considering how many people, and different types of artists were participating.

My only complaint was about one guy who was quite lewd to Eloquent Mx Loki, who was topless and helping promote my work. But the organizers and security took it very seriously and helped us out. But all in all it was a great night, I'm really happy I got to be a part of it, and really proud of myself for completing such a big undertaking.

I would also like to thank a bunch of people! Thank-you to everyone who bought a ticket and came along, and those who bought a ticket and didn't come along, your support really helped me out.
Thank-you to Nate of Hades Industries for pimping me out a lot and all the support. Thank-you to Mad Dame for letting me use your studio for a week, I couldn't have created my art without that space.
Thank-you to my models Baz Kaybee, Eloquent Mx Loki, Miss Twisted, Sally Ersch, Stirling Gill-Chambers, Soot Silver, Tahlia Celenn, and Void Decay for agreeing to be a part of this project, and being gorgeous people who embodied my ideas.
I want to also send a HUGE thank-you to Karen Richens, for helping me out with funding this project.
And another huge thank-you again to Eloquent Mx Loki for supporting me with this enterprise, coming into the studio everyday with me and helping me out during the shoots, and for helping promote my work on the night. I couldn't have done it with out you.

The photos of my new project won't be posted for a little while, because I am planning to get them published. And photos from the night will be sent to me in about two weeks, once I get them I will post them.

Self Portrait Runes: Fehu

I've decided to start a new project. One that's going to be continuous and evolving.
The project shall be titled Self Portrait Runes.

I'm rarely in front of a camera, I don't find myself as beautiful as the people I photograph. And so, this project is going to involve self portraits, to help me love myself more and represent stages in my life.
Every three months or so, maybe more, maybe less, I'm going to take a self portrait. Where do the runes come in? Well, I'm going to pick a rune I feel represents me at that particular moment in my life. As time goes on I imagine the runes will change, or if a rune hasn't changed, how it relates to me will have.
For my first self portrait I chose the rune Fehu.

Fehu: Cattle

Phonetic equivalent: F

Literal Meanings:
Cattle, (Moving) Wealth.

Divination Meanings:
Prosperity, Money, Wealth, Concern with physical and financial needs, Goals, Promotion, Self-esteem

Deity:
Freyr

Analysis:
Fehu is both the day-to-day reality of our lives and the catalyst that awakens us to what lies beyond. It is whatever we think we are seeking, which frequently bears no resemblance to what we will eventually find. It is also our home, for after all our wanderings we will still need to attend to our physical needs and ground ourselves in the simple pleasures of home, family, and good work. -Runestones

I chose Fehu because I feel that I'm waiting for the future to arrive. With my focus being on the RAW exhibition lately, I am not grounded. My day to day life is for the exhibition, and the exhibition is for what might come afterwards; more exposure, more jobs, and ultimately more money. That is what I am focusing on right now.
I feel that once the exhibition is over, then things will settle. But I know I will just continue looking further into the future, and I must ground myself, I cannot wait for it to happen all of a sudden. And Fehu will help me ground myself again.

Muse

Last month I did this shoot with Mx Loki. We wanted to explore Mx Loki's androgyny, by having the chest and groin covered it gives the illusion that they could have breasts or large pecs, a vagina or a penis.
This set is called 'Muse' because it reminds me of the Greek muses. It's also called that because Mx Loki inspires and encourages me in my art all the time.

Latest photoset to be published, 'Queen of the Apocalypse' which appeared in Issue 6 of Twisted Latex Magazine, available for purchase HERE.
Mx Loki and myself had this shoot planned for months, but kept putting it on the back burner in favor of other shooting opportunities. But last November we finally got to shoot it, and had a lot of fun playing around in the junk pile, finding cool things to pose and photograph with. I'm really happy this is our first published set of 2015.
